Lucknow reported the death of four children due to Diptheria in the last few days in the Banda district. According to information three of them were residents of the Triveni settlement, and the fourth resided in Baberu, some 50 kilometres away.

Dr. Anil Kumar Srivastava, Chief medical officer said, “All the deaths have taken place on different dates. But three of the four are in one village Triveni which has a population of about 3,000. Two of the three children in this village were aged about 10 years while the third one was 2.5 years old. The fourth child belongs to the Baberu area and died in Prayagraj.” He added that the families of the children had previously worked elsewhere before the pandemic but had returned after their elders lost their jobs due to the lockdown and the reason behind these deaths might be missing the vaccination dose.

The situation is being closely watched by the state health agency. Officials confirmed that they had camped in the affected village for the previous three days even though they haven′t yet declared the situation an outbreak.

The CMO stated that 600 kids are living in Triveni and that everyone has undergone a diphtheria screening. With the help of the WHO team, samples were collected for all the children and sent for testing in the state lab. (Times of India, Aug 26, 2022)
